Our Inner Dialogue Can Hinder Success

You know that little voice in your head that tells you “Wow! You’re doing great!”.

It lifts you up and makes you take that next step forward.

That same inner voice can really mess with you, too.

“Well, I ate 1 Hershey kiss, might as well blow it for the rest of the day and have a double burger, fries, malt, and hey cake!”.

It happens to everyone. Sometimes. Too often?

Then our one step forward turns into a mile backward.

It’s a  process, but it CAN happen overnight, if we decide to do it. Turn that negative voice into a positive – or at least neutral -one.

The next time you get off course, turn it around, don’t let it become a negative thought avalanche.

“I had a Hershey kiss and it was great!”

It may seem like such a little thing, but we have to change our thinking from negative to positive to succeed in anything.

If you have children, did you ever think “Man, he’s never going to be potty trained. I might as well give up and let him wear diapers until he’s 20.” Ok maybe you THOUGHT it, but you didn’t act on that though lol.

That type of dedication to succeeding can be applied to our eating habits as well.

When You’re Having Trouble With The Fork In The Road

Yes, that one.

Sometimes the biggest conundrum you have on any plan is “what do I eat when I’m not at home?”.

The first order of business is to plan your order ahead of time, if at all possible. Look up restaurants and their menus while you have time to give it a thorough once over.

When you don’t have the time or opportunity (let’s face it, with a smart phone you DO, but we’ll work with the “what if”) , stick to basics like grilled steak or chicken or fish, steamed or grilled vegetables and skip the other sides. Try to avoid sauces and ask for your broccoli “loaded” (sour cream, butter and cheese. Bacon if they use real bacon.) If it’s on your plan, a baked sweet potato with butter can be an awesome choice.

When in doubt: go for fast food. Yes. Hit the Golden Arches, the King, JIB or whatever. They have 100% beef patties and garden salads. Not the most romantic or exciting meal, but you know exactly what you’re getting.

If you’re completely stuck, keep a packet of tuna and a few packets of mayonnaise in your purse or case. Don’t forget the plastic fork 🙂

Why Paleo Diets Are Misunderstood

I’ve been on the Wild Diet since February and have done relatively well for a 50 year old, in menopause (aka: hormone hell), female.

I don’t weigh, because it depresses the hell out of me, but I have gone down 2 dress sizes, so I call it a victory.

I was 50/50 on plan from about April 8th through May 2nd, and I own up to that, it was a time of stress, but I still made bad food choices and that’s on me.

My “diet” didn’t fail me. I failed me.

I’ve been back on plan since the 3rd and rocking along nicely.

Anyway back to the topic of my subject line:

Paleo blogs are filled with recipes using “paleo approved” ingredients: loads of fruit and lots of natural sweeteners (ie: stevia, agave, coconut palm sugar, dates, etc).

I am a member of The Fat Burning Tribe on facebook, which is a paid ($27 a month) support site for the Wild Diet.

If you are a paying member for 3 months, you can stop paying and be a member of the facebook group for life, but you lose access to the Fat Burning Tribe web site.

I think the first month is still just $1, and that counts towards your 3 months paid “lifer” status.

The Wild Diet challenge right now is to have a green smoothie a day for 10 days.

Simple enough, there are some basic rules about the smoothies, and how much fruit you can use (not much) because you don’t want a sugar bomb!

So for the past 3 days people have been posting what they’re putting in their smoothies.

One guy posted he had a whole banana, a big handful of blueberries, some spinach and I forget what else. But basically it was not a green smoothie, it was a fruit smoothie.

Someone pointed out, trying to help, that it was more fruit than was recommended and was immediately dismissed with the typical “It’s better than having a bagel and cream cheese” excuse.

But is it better?
A regular/small Lenders bagel has 43g carbs and 3g sugar; a medium banana has 39g carbs and 19g sugar! (the recommended sugar limit is 4g sugar according to the Wild Diet smoothies guides).

Add the handful of blueberries and this guy could have had a Coke comparably. An 8oz original Coca-cola has  26g carbs and 26g sugar – less carbs than the banana and not much more sugar! How shocking is that?

Overall, the banana is much higher in sugar than the bagel, but it’s not a grain, so it’s “paleo friendly”. ???

There’s the rub: if it’s natural, it must be healthy, right?

And that’s where I really wish paleo blogs would own up and stop pushing desserts that are loaded with bananas, dates, fruits and high sugar “natural” foods.

It still comes down to educating yourself, taking credit AND blame when you screw up, and not counting on others to do all the legwork and research.

BTW my green smoothies are really basic: load the blender with greens (spinach, Kale, chard, a blend of greens), add 3-4 frozen strawberries, a couple tablespoons of coconut milk, vanilla, a little stevia and enough water to blend.

My smoothies clocks in at about 180 calories and 12g carbs/4g net carbs.

It’s simple, very low sugar, and a tasty way to get 2-3 servings of veggies in daily without giving it much thought.
